 Welcome to Intro to Digital Photo!

This is going to be an interesting semester (understatement of the decade) but given the time period we're in it should actually make for some interesting photography! In order to post your photographs for each assignment and conduct the writeups you will be assigned, you will need to create a Tumblr blog dedicated to the work you do this semester. This must be done before the end of the first week of class.

Your Assignment for the first week of class:

Create your Tumblr Blog that you will use for the semester and SEND THE URL ADDRESS TO KEVIN GRAY (your humble professor) at grayk@hartwick.edu!

THEN: for your first post, post a photograph that you have taken in the PAST YEAR that you are proud of and represents the kind of photography you like to do. WRITE A SHORT CAPTION (no more than a paragraph) on what you like about this photograph. Do you like it because of the composition? Because it represents a moment of time? Why does this photo resonate with you?

This must be done no later than the end of class on Tuesday, September 1st.

The photograph you choose to write about can be a photo from your cell phone, and even one that has been edited with an Instagram or other filter.

How to create a Tumblr blog:

1. Go to tumblr.com and either log into your account if you have one, or Get Started to create a new one if you don't. You'll need to create a username and password (it can be anything you like) and then you'll get a confirmation email you'll need to click on.

 

2. Once you've gotten into your account, click on the Profile icon (the little human figure) on the top right, and scroll down to the grey bar that says "Tumblrs    +New" and click on "+New".

3. Choose a title for your blog. Please put your name in the title, but otherwise you can call it anything you want. Then, create a URL, or web address, for your blog. This must be some combination of your name + digital photo. If your first choice is taken, try different variations until you get one that works. THIS IS THE ADDRESS THAT I NEED TO SEE YOUR BLOG, so please remember it! Also, do NOT make your blog private or protect it with a password. Other students in the class need easy access to it.

4. Once you've created a blog, you can log in (you can also do this via your phone with the Tumblr app) to make posts. In most cases you'll be posting photos, though you will also be using the Text function and sometimes sharing links. To post a photo, click on the camera icon at the top of the screen and then click on Upload Photos to choose photos on your computer or phone. Once you've uploaded them you can also add captions, or text, underneath them. Click Post to post your photo.
